Stonewall celebrates new homophobic incitement offence

From today, Tuesday 23 March, a much-needed new criminal offence outlaws threatening behaviour or materials intended to stir up hatred against people on grounds of their sexual orientation. Stonewall successfully lobbied for the new protections and warmly welcomes their introduction.

PRESIDENCY SAYS “NO OBJECTION” TO EE MARCH

Today, Tuesday 16 March 2010, Equal Education (EE) filed an urgent application at the North Gauteng High Court.

We were forced to take this action for two reasons: Firstly, to assert out right to march to the Union Buildings on 26 March, and secondly because in a letter [see bottom] dated 24 November 2009, Mr Dumisani Mahlasela, Head: Public Participation and Public Relations, The Presidency, stated: “Mr Vusi Mavimbela, Director-General in The Presidency, has directed that all marches to the Union Buildings and the Presidency be suspended until further notice.”

South Africa's Social Conservatism: A Real and Present Danger

As much as those of us who identify ourselves as social progressives would like to believe otherwise, the reality is that South Africa is a bastion of social conservatism. Indeed, one of the most glaring contradictions of South Africa’s post-apartheid ‘transition’ is that the widely acknowledged (and regularly celebrated) social progressiveness of the Constitution is, in large part, at fundamental odds with the beliefs and views of the majority of South Africans themselves.

When resources get tight, people go on the warpath to extirpate those who they are told do not deserve to share a slice of the pie. All countries have, to some degree, targeted people with an otherness and eradicated them so that those in favour can supposedly enjoy a greater share of the natural bounties of the earth. From a psychological point of view it is questionable whether enjoyment can be had after such behaviour, but the discussion of propaganda and mass psychology we will leave for another time.
