Invitation to the Ekurhuleni LGBTI Annual Pride Event- 2010
The violent murders of lesbians Eudy Simelani and Girly “Sgelane” Nkosi and hate crimes towards LGBTIs in general prompted the formation of EPOC (Ekurhuleni Pride Organizing Committee) in July 2009. This Committee’s vision is amongst others to educate and bring awareness to the community of Ekurhuleni concerning the existence of LGBTI’s in the society. We are hoping that this endeavour will unite the people of Ekurhuleni and encourage them to be open-minded and involved in each others issues, particularly LGBTI issues. Ekurhuleni has a rich history of LGBTIs and yet numerous individuals still don’t identify with the LGBTI community and what we symbolize.
Last year’s Pride Event which was held in September, was a huge success with more than 500 gays and lesbians marching the streets of Kwa-Thema in the morning and celebrating at Eudy’s Park throughout the day. The theme was “Walk against hate crime”. The event was attended by the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni: Ms Ntombi Mekgwe, and Councillor for the Tornado Area (Kwa-Thema): Lindiwe Lasindwa. There were also local pastors, various organizations and members of the community present.
