Triangle Project commends the South African Police Services for their investigative work in locating and arresting Sicelo Mase, Zolile Kobese, Sabelo Yekiso and Mfundo Kulani within four days of their escape from the holding cells of Khayelitsha Magistrates Court.
We are also pleased to hear of the arrest of a police sergeant for allegedly aiding the escape of the prisoners.
We urge the thorough investigation and prosecution of any corrupt officials who are found to be involved in assisting the escape.
We want to assured that security at the court is prioritised and that measures are put in place to ensure that no prisoner standing trial can escape.
We wish to reiterate our demand that the trial into the murder of Zoliswa Nkonyana be given the priority it deserves.
Once again, we want to call attention to the rights of Zoliswa’s family and the other victim in this attack to closure and justice. It is unacceptable that this trial has been allowed to drag on for four years. This trial, like many others, highlights how the Criminal-Justice System, through its inadequacies, becomes complicit in denying lesbian women and all women their constitutional right to equality, human dignity and the right to be free from all forms of violence.
We remain angry at the unprofessional conduct of the defense attorneys, who have caused innumerable delays in the trial by arriving late or not at all on trial dates. We continue to demand that the Court put in place sanctions for attorneys who derail the justice system.
