South Africa’s Freedom Day

 
The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project (LGEP) is proud to extend an open invitation to the 2010 Freedom for All Rally. In this 16th year remembrance of the first democratic vote, the LGEP together with its partners and the communities of Ekurhuleni will reflect on freedom and the achievement of full liberation for the diverse LGBTI communities in South Africa.
 
From 09h00 on 27 April 2010 at the Eudy Simelane Memorial Park in the Tornado Section of Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni at least 400 people are expected to join to commemorate the lives of LGBTI people and activists: Eudy Simelane, Girly Nkosi, Zoliswa Nkonyana, Sizakele Sigasa, Salome Moosa, Thokozane Qwabe, Waldo Bester and the many others killed because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
 
On this Freedom Day the Equality Project honour women and men of different generations from the Ekurhuleni community who have being important voices in the defence of the rights of LGBTI and promoters of full liberation. Certificates and medals to 15 amazing Champions for Equality will be handed.
 
Women, transgender, lesbians and young kids from across Gauteng will play friendly soccer matches throughout the day.

Directions from Johannesburg:

1: Take the N17 highway past Germiston toll gate.
Follow the Springs N17 Highway
2: Proceeding straight on, you will see Carnival City Casino which will be on your right hand side. Proceed straight to Brakpan/Springs toll gate.
Total toll costs – one way – R10.oo
3: Take the second off ramp - Ergo. At the stop sign turn right to Kwa-Thema and go over the bridge.
4: Proceed straight as the road bends; Save More Supermarket will be on your left hand side at the stop sign.
5: Turn left at the STOP sign and proceed until the next stop sign.
6: Turn right, you will meet the robots, don't turn but proceed straight after the robots. The Kwa-Thema Police Station will be on your left.
7: Go past Police Station, a church and a school on your left hand side.
8: Count three streets on your right hand side and turn right on the third street. You will see an open field on your right hand side. That is your destination.
Some people will already be there so you need not worry.
