The Lesbian and Gay Equality Project welcomes the breaking of silence on homophobia
by our government, through President Jacob Zuma´s statement in Parliament today,
responding to the opposition party´s member´s question. The media reports that
President Zuma stated that our government has "condemned the action taken to arrest
people in terms of our constitution" and that government has not "kept quiet, so we are
with you on this issue as representing the country and the continent. We are working
hard to change attitudes and we will continue to do so." Further reports state that the
President said there is a "need to persuade, we need to make people understand, we
need to move with them. We have never adopted a confrontational stance on matters,"

Dear friends, colleagues and Comrades

A court in Blantyre, Malawi yesterday, 18 May 2010, convicted a gay couple of gross indecency and unnatural acts. Steven Monjeza (26) and Tiwonge Chimbalanga (20) were arrested in December 2009 after celebrating their engagement and had their bail applications denied. They have been in jail ever since and could now face at least 14 years in prison. Sentencing is expected within the next week.

Malawian Justice System Violates Human Rights

Petition to the Malawian Government, Secretary General of the United Nations and the South African Goverment.

We condemn in the strongest terms the conviction of Steven Mongeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga in a court in Blantyre for committing so-called “unnatural acts”. Steven and Tiwonge were arrested in December 2009 after celebrating their engagement and have been in jail ever since.

A committee of Cabinet has made recommendations that could end Ndorwa West MP David Bahati’s proposal to have a separate law punishing homosexuality in Uganda. The recommendations, which Saturday Monitor has seen, come close to dismissing Mr Bahati’s draft legislation.

Rane Ramón Arroyo (born November 15, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois, died 7 May 2009) is an American poet, playwright, and scholar of Puerto Rican descent who has written numerous books and received many literary awards. He is a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Toledo in Ohio. His work deals extensively with issues of immigration, Latino culture, and homosexuality. Arroyo is openly gay and frequently writes self-reflexive, autobiographical texts. He is the partner of the American poet Glenn Sheldon.
